Additionally, there are many entry-level job opportunities in the fields of science and technology. It’s no wonder why students want to study these fields in college but first they have to find a way to pay for tuition. Every penny counts when it comes to paying tuition and fees. Regardless of the specific scientific field, students should look at every scholarship option available to them; there are many large and small scholarships for students interested in studying science and technology (READ: College Scholarships 101: Burgers and Donuts?). 1. American Chemical Society Scholars Program This scholarship is geared for high school seniors as well as college students who happen to be a minority. Under-attack Instagram gets class action lawsuit for Christmas Image courtesy of Asbury Asbury The story so far: on December 17, Instagram announced a change to its Terms of Service (TOS), to take effect on the 16th of January, in which the company would reserve the right to use customers’ photos with self-awarded impunity. In other words, Instagram would be able to distribute users’ content to anyoneâ€"think iStockPhoto, sans permission or compensation of image creators. The news inspired such a negative reaction that Systrom recanted the announcement within hours, insisting that “Instagram has no intention of selling your photos, and we never did.” A December 19 revision of the impending TOS is available on Instagram’s blog. Damage control has been meager at best. Rival companies point out that they never even hinted at appropriating user photos. And then, of course, there’s the lawsuit. Funes’s legal complaint is available for reading on scribd.com. Filed December 21, it condemns both the original and final versions of the new TOS and states that users “agree that a business or other entity may pay [Instagram] to display [user’s] username, likeness, photos…and/or actions…without any compensation to [the user].” This clause was removed in the update, but Funes is unappeased. Why? A few reasons, actually. Although users who disagree with the finalized TOS may “opt out” by deleting their accounts prior to the January 19 effect date, their “materials and data may persist and appear within the Service,” particularly if others have shared them. Additionally, Instagram absolves itself of blame for “damages, losses, or injuries that arise out of Instagram’s acts,” and that a user forfeits “rights to enjoin or restrain” the company. Should a conflict arise, as of the 19th, neither company nor user will be able to file a class-action lawsuit. Finally, by accepting the new terms, users concede that they “may be waiving rights with respect to claims that are at this time unknown or unsuspected”. Essentially, the plaintiff argues that Instagram is trying to create a loophole through which it can gain control of users’ photos, while protecting said loophole with language that reduces complaints to tiffs that must be settled individually, so as not to threaten the companys reputation. What does this mean? I’ve tried my best to translate the legalese: 1. Technically, Instagram users own their photos, but if an account is deleted, Instagram has license to its content. Think of the agreements you click through when installing software: as a licensee, you have fairly extensive use of program content. If a friend has sent around a picture of you shotgunning beer in a banana suit, the situation is out of your hands, even if you delete your account. 2. After the new TOS take effect, Instagram can add policies and practices that users don’t agree withâ€"but, since the company renounced responsibility for complaints “at this time unknown”, the plaintiff won’t have much to stand onâ€"and if they do, they won’t be able to team up with like-minded citizens in a class-action suit. To be fair, neither can Instagram. Then again, when Mark Zuckerberg owns your company, you don’t necessarily need to take class action in the first place. Hmm. Theres a delicate balance between running a savvy, self-protecting business and misleading consumers. Either way, you might want to keep the banana suit pics to yourself for now.

Singing Basics Do I Need to Take Voice Lessons to Improve Suzy S. Singing is a hobby that people of all ages and ability levels can enjoy. And if you really want to improve, working one-on-one with a qualified teacher can take you the next level even faster than teaching yourself how to sing. Whats the difference? What can a teacher give you that you cant learn yourself? Here are seven important skills that you will gain when taking voice lessons: Establishing Good Habits From the Start Everyone knows the saying practice makes perfect, but its not exactly true. While its inevitable that youre going to make mistakes from time to time, the way you practice is how you will continue to perform. Perfection does not just require practice it requires perfect practice. By taking private voice lessons as a beginner, you will learn the proper vocal techniques from day one, rather than potentially learning bad (or even dangerous) singing habits that can take months or years of hard work to break. These habits include correct posture and effective breathing, which can make a huge difference to your tone. Learning How to Warm Up Just like an athlete needs time to warm up before exercising, your voice needs to warm up before you start singing. Warm-up exercises are one of the first singing basics that you will learn during your lessons. These simple patterns are performed slowly and methodically before singing, and should be performed comfortably in the middle of your range. As your vocal cords warm up, you can slowly work your range higher and lower. Your voice teacher will teach you several different warm-up exercises as part of your singing basics foundation. Developing Your Ear Unlike an instrument where you can press a key or a certain combination of keys to create a specific note, your voice has a much wider range of flexibility. Your voice can hit notes, as well as the half, quarter, and smaller fractional steps between them. While this flexibility can be skillfully harnessed for accents or stylistic choices, it can be quite challenging for the beginning singer to hit each note precisely. To help with this, the first singing basics step you must master is training your ear. You need to learn how to hear the difference between hitting the note perfectly and when you are sharp (above the pitch) or flat (below the pitch). One of the most common exercises to work on ear training is to listen to a tone played by an instrument or sung by your teacher and repeating it. Exposure to a Wider Variety of Music Different genres of music require different techniques and skills. And unfortunately, there are many singers with gorgeous voices who severely limit their options by only perfecting one genre.  In your private lessons, your teacher will work with you to determine which styles interest you the most and best fit your voice. Many factors will come into play here, including the tone of your voice and your vocal range. You will learn which sounds and techniques to use to portray different genres. Learning How to Read Music While many singers go their whole life without ever knowing how to read a note of music, learning how to read music is a valuable singing basics skill. Most choirs and choral groups require at least a basic understanding of music notation, especially note count values (so you know how long to hold each note for) and intervals (the distance between two notes). Learning how to read music is very much like learning how to speak a foreign language. While you may be able to learn some of the basics on your own, you will gain a much deeper understanding by working with a native speaker your teacher, that is! Once you have learned how to read music, you can begin to practice sight reading exercises, which many singing auditions require. You will be handed a sheet of music and given a starting pitch. After just a few minutes of practice, the starting pitch is played once again and you will sing the notes as written to the best of your ability. Although it is a challenging exercise that requires a lot of skill, it gets much easier with practice! Learning How to Sing in Harmony While a solo a cappella voice can make beautiful music on its own, there is something magical about the music created when multiple voices sing in harmony with each other. Harmony is when different notes that are complementary to one another are sung or played at the same time. Most people are so used to listening to the melody, or the main tune of a song, that they find it quite challenging to sing the harmony line. While some singers seem to be born with an ear for harmony, most singers must work to develop this skill. Not only can a private vocal teacher show you how to sing harmony, youll have a built-in duet partner to sing with! Avoiding Injury Although people have made music since the beginning of time, it is possible to injure yourself when singing. One of the singing basics that your teacher will show you is how to take preventative measures to avoid injuring or permanently damaging your vocal cords. Staying well-hydrated and not straining your voice, for example, are very important to help you avoid nodules, polyps, and cysts on your vocal cords. Not only does it take away the pressure of having to deal with your co-workers in person, it’s cheaper and you will get a lot more done! Of course, working from homewhether it’s  running your own business  or telecommuting as an employeedoes present some unique challenges. Most notably, you have to be more vigilant about protecting your work and your identity than you do when you work out of someone else’s company space. Keeping Private Data Private Whether you are working as an employee or are building your own business, it is incredibly important that you not leave proprietary information digitally lying around. For example, don’t keep financial information in an easily accessible cloud folder or on a computer without malware and hacking protection. Instead, keep important documents on a  SecureUSB  that you only plug into your device when you absolutely have to. This way, even if someone does break in and take a stroll through your files they won’t find anything. And, of course, having a backup of your backup is always a good idea. Just Say No to BYOD If you are telecommuting as someone else’s employee, ask that your employer provides the machine on which you will be doing your work. Supplying your own computer opens up your personal information to whatever prying eyes might be trying to take advantage of your employeror that one coworker who isn’t exactly subtle about wanting your job. If your employer is hesitant, remind them that there are many advantages to their providing you with the computers and devices you’ll need for work. For instance, they can install monitoring software that will track whatever you do while using that device (allowing them to keep tabs on your productivity). They can also decide which malware protection and software will be downloaded. They won’t have that level of control if you’re using your personal device! Protecting Personal Devices If you lose that battle with your employer or if you are building your own business, you will need to take some extra steps to protect your company as well as your personal information. Basic malware protection isn’t going to be enough. Here are some extra steps you can take: Email Encryption: encrypting your email doesn’t have to be complicated or require extensive knowledge of coding like it used to. Today there are a  bunch of different plugins  that you can download and install that will do all of that work for you. Obviously, if you want to learn the code yourself, that’s great! But if your brain doesn’t speak code, a plugin will work just fine. File Encryption: In addition to encrypting your communications, you should also use drive and file encryption to thwart any jerks who are able to skirt your malware protection protocols. File encryption is usually built into most computing these days but if you want to add some extra protection, using independent encryption is better. These codes are updated far more frequently than built in encryption is updated by manufacturers. Password Protection: You likely already know the basic rules of creating a really good password. And you also likely already know that you need to create multiple passwords and you need to change them often. Doing this can eat up a lot of your time and still leaves you slightly vulnerable. A better option is to use a password protection program that uses two-factor authorization for use. This way you don’t have to remember or manually enter your passwords and the two-factor authorization will prevent data breaches from compromising your information. Two Factor Authorization: Speaking of  two-factor authorization, turn on this feature on every account that offers it. Two-factor authorization, or TFA, is where an account requires a second form of authorization from you before it will allow you or anyone else access to an account. This second form of authorization might be a code that gets sent to your cell phone via text. Sometimes it will be a regenerating code that you access via a key like Google Authenticator. Some companies will even send you physical “keys” that you plug into your USB ports. Not only does TFA keep your accounts secure, it will let you know immediately if someone is trying to access those accounts without your permission. Remember, working from home has a lot of perks but that doesn’t mean that you can be complacent when it comes to your privacy and proprietary data. Use the tips we’ve shared here to make sure you’re as safe as possible and that sensitive information doesn’t fall into nefarious hands.
